Thomas Pettifer & Co Sign
A very large, hand painted wooden shop front sign, within a later surround, for an agent of Thomas Pettifer & Co Ltd. The local agent in Coads Green, near Launceston, Cornwall was W.H. Hooper. This sign was salvaged and, fortunately, has been mounted in a later frame to protect it (see reverse photos). The sign likely dates from the 1940s, as the phone numbers in the area would have been changed some time in the 1950s or early 1960s.
Farrier, Thomas Pettifer, established his company in 1836 following the success of his herbal concoctions supplied to horse owners. The company grew throughout the Victorian era and well into the 20th Century. Later, it received an official Royal Warrant as supplier of animal medicines and nutritional products to Queen Elizabeth II. The company remained a family business for many generations, only leaving family ownership for a 30 year period from the mid 1980s. It was reacquired by the family in 2018 and is still thriving to this day, from its base in Northamptonshire.
