An exceptional and highly desirable late 18th to early 19th-century English Georgian bronze apothecary mortar and matching pestle. This complete, matrimonial set boasts a remarkably heavy cast and an uncleaned, historic patina that will appeal directly to collectors of early metalware, medical history, or fine kitchenalia.
The mortar features a classic flared rim above a ring-turned body, flanked by two distinctive stub-and-knob handles designed for a secure grip during use. The interior reveals prominent, authentic horizontal lathe-turning marks from its original hand-finishing, alongside honest wear consistent with generations of practical use.
Crucially, the flat base retains its prominent circular casting sprue mark (mold plug), providing definitive proof of its traditional, pre-industrial sand-cast manufacture. The matching bronze pestle features a robust, flat-bottomed pounding foot, a beautifully turned central ring grip, and a balanced ball terminal.
Free from modern chemical polishing, the set retains its genuine, deep olive-brown age patina with faint traces of natural verdigris in the recesses.
Pestle measures: 7" long x 1.5" diameter (max)
Mortar measures: 4.5" tall x 4.5" diameter (6" across the handles)
Excellent antique condition. Structurally sound with no cracks or major structural damage. Retains an original, unpolished patina, authentic surface pitting, and historic interior wear from centuries of use.
