AA Directional Arrow Enamel Sign - Double-Sided
A rare AA (Automobile Association) double-sided directional arrow enamel sign in good used condition. Dating from the 1930s/40s, it shows the iconic bright yellow background with the associations' emblem to one end, and a direction arrow at the other (the same on each side). Produced by Franco SW1, one of the most well known enamel sign makers' of the period. The signs were designed to be re-used, with details of an event or a diversion applied with a thick black paint, or in later years, with heavy duty sticker letters as this was easier to clean. There is a ghost event or diversion on one side of this sign, but we have been unable to decipher it. The design predates the introduction of standardised road signage in the 1960s, and could still be seen in use occasionally in the late 20th Century.
Great original condition, with all the mounting holes still intact, and some chipping around the edges. Pretty good considering this would have been moved around and reworked over and over again.
