A gorgeous carved alabaster recumbent lion, inspired by the famous sculptures created by Italian artist, Antonio Canova. This is a reproduction of one of the two original lion figures sculpted in the late 18th Century (1792) for Pope Clement XIII's tomb. Canova was commissioned by the Pontiff's nephew to produce the lions, and the originals are at St Peters Basilica in Rome, Italy. The 2 figures were a sleeping lion to represent moderation, and this one, a vigilant lion representing energy. The alabaster figure is mounted on a green marble base.
