Rare Spillers Winalot enamel sign - The Wholemeal Food for Dogs. This sign was found buried in a local garden of a house that had been built on the grounds of a food mill/factory. The Spillers Winalot brand was originally developed to feed racing greyhounds in 1927 (hence the name), but soon became popular also for domestic pets. Many of the earliest signs (late 1920s/early 1930s) have the red background, but yellow block type, whereas the Spillers scroll text seems to only appear on the slightly later green signs (mid to late 1930s). This would suggest that this is what we would call a 'transitional' sign and as a result there were not many produced. The Spillers company was established in 1829 and operated flour mills and bakeries as well as selling pet and equine feed. The Spillers company was acquired by Nestle in 1997, but the Winalot brand still continues under the Purina business owned by Nestle. A rare survivor in great condition for a piece that has been displayed for many years and buried in the ground for many more. Has some losses around the edges and fixing holes, and a few minor losses in the body of the sign, but the text has survived in remarkably good condition. The 'Printed in England' text can still be clearly seen at the bottom of the sign.
