Antique Mancur portable scale dating from the 18th Century. Also referred to as Moon Scales, or C-Spring Scales (as a result of their design), and Buffalo Hide Scales in the US for more obvious reasons. These were predominantly used in Europe and the USA to weigh the heavy results of hunting trips. Made from iron with a brass crescent dial and a split pointer so that both sides of the scale can be read. One side can weigh 0-60lbs and the other side can weigh 20-400lbs - this equates to a max weight of approx 180kg. Most European countries converted to metric (kg) measurements in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, which dates this piece to the mid-late 18th Century. In great condition for it's age and fully working.
