Antique (circa 1900) heavy duty hand truck manufactured by Ellen Keeley Barrows of 33 Neal Street, Covent Garden, London. Cast iron chassis and wheels with wood frame. The truck was acquired 20 years ago and was restored in 1999 back to its' former glory, including reproducing the carving exactly as it was on the original wood frame. A small brass plaque is included on the wood frame to identify the restorer (Stan Toombs) and date of restoration.
Ellen Keeley Barrows would manufacture the barrows and rent them to the local market traders back in the day. Ellen Keeley Barrows was established in Ireland in the early 19th Century (hence the carved shamrock in the wood frame). This piece has 'Ellen Keeley, Covent Garden, 33 Neal Street' carved into the wood, along with a number '375A' - this may refer to the truck type or the original renter - it is not clear.
