Really unusual black laquer Art Deco hat stretcher stamped Spiess Frere of Rue St Denis, Paris. Originating from a time when Paris dominated the millinery scene, the most fascinating thing about this hat stretcher is the stylised face on the front - we have never seen one similar. The hat stretcher is carved from wood and lacquered in black. There is a handle at the rear which operates a thread to open and close the two halves of the head. The original ivorine label remains showing "Le Confortable", Modele depose. The stretcher is in really nice condition - there are one or two losses of lacquer here and there, mainly end of the nose and around the edges of the two halves of the head as shown in pics, but it still works and displays beautifully. So rare - can't find another on the internet.
